But this year, as protests across the Middle East have actually pushed up the price of oil, the concern of discovering alternative sources of fuel has entered sharp focus.
In an area that has one of the highest carbon footprints worldwide, one organization is benefiting from the growing pressure to discover options to oil. It's set up the Middle East's very first scheme to recycle cooking oil into biodiesel. It's proving profitable too, already their client-list consists of McDonald's.
